Practicalist is a blog by Ben Clemens. Its interest in ideas is to treat them as though they are people, with complex emotional, spiritual, and intellectual needs. It follows Richard Rorty in avoiding the attempt "to unite 'beauty and justice' in some kind of seamlessly perceived whole ... the consequence of such an attempt is to harden political aspirations into rigid ideologies and to distort reality by ... aestheticizing it."

Hi Ben!

I saw that you are speaking in April - that's awesome! Anyways, I was thinking about your note about storytelling and found this article and thought of you:

Storytelling to relieve sorrow....
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2013/jan/07/stephen-grosz-psychoanalyst?CMP=twt_fd

Have you heard of this guy? It struck me that there are all sorts of reasons we tell stories... to connect, to heal, to motivate, to escape...

When I grow up, I want to be a buzz marketing campaign

I am so amused by this. I work with Ben, so the idea that he doesn’t exist amuses me to no end. Although I have always suspected that he was some sort of non-existant marketing tool.

both good points, but 1. I don't think the real truths about ourselves are ever really boring, just the everyday things, and 2. the internet has been a much more durable medium than any physical format: things that I put up on my Web server ten years ago I still have, whereas everything I had on hard disks has been lost a couple times. And: it's not all public, just some of it, according to what part of it I want to be public.

A couple of comments:
1) Perhaps the reason most bloggers are aspiring to manage some bullshit public persona is because the modest pieces of their lives - the small bits that actually consume them - are so painfully boring that they're not worth telling.
2) It mostly scares me to put the small, modest pieces of my life online for two reasons. A) It's not anyone's business and B) I don't trust that this electronic format will be there for me to remember even a couple years from now. I used to think it was a good idea, but I've lost count of the myriad zip disks and all the other Authentic Media
